Bench Craft Company

I don't have much time tonight, but.... steer clear of Bench Craft Company. This is an advertising company out of Portland, Or. They call numbers across state lines (the "do not call" list is foreign to them), promise you advertising at reasonable terms, then charge your credit card and send you a contract which reads nothing like the details given to you by phone, the bottom of which reads, "agreed to by phone".

This actually turns into a long story, but let's suffice it to say that I'm moving forward with whatever actions necessary to get my "deposit" back. They said the "deposit" would hold the ad spot until I could read over the agreement. Then immediately started sending "balance due" invoices, followed by "delinquent" invoices, then finally "collection invoices". All this when we never agreed on the terms of the agreement.

SPECIAL NOTE: You can HELP get the word out about the Bench Craft Company by linking to this page from your website, blog, myspace, etc. Your inbound link will raise the position of this page on the search engines. PLEASE HELP OUT!

Again, DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BENCH CRAFT COMPANY out of Portland, OR.

Thanks for the info. I was just contacted by them regarding advertising. It sounded a bit fishy. I'm glad I found your blog about the Bench Craft Company.

I'll definitely pass.

Did you happen to see the info on them in the ripoffreport.com? It appears they have almost 200 Better Business Bureau complaints filed against them.

Bench Craft Company is BAD NEWS.

I have had such an incredibly poor exchange with the Bench Craft Company, that I am considering getting a referral to an expert Class Action Lawyer and compiling a case from many of the clients whom they have defrauded.

If you have been wronged by the Bench Craft Company (i.e. given misinformation, promised something that wasn't delivered, not disclosing all the facts to you prior to your purchase, etc.) please email me at cameronnovak@sbcglobal.net with your contact information.

I have started a list of those who have been harmed by the Bench Craft Company's disregard for ethics and the law.

Lying to me about $400 of advertising could cost them several hundred thousand dollars in punitive damages. I'm getting giddy just thinking about it.

Bench Craft Company has awakened the GIANT.

P.S. I was just contacted for the first time by their collection agency this afternoon (the name of which escapes me now). The representative told me his name was Craig... I said, I didn't get your last name... He said... uuuhhh ummm Jones is my last name... I then told him I would be recording our conversation, he said he wouldn't talk to me anymore and hung up. I guess the collection agency the Bench Craft Company uses is as shady as the Bench Craft company itself. Go figure.

Unfortunately, a real estate agent friend just got Bench Crafted. There is so much on the web about how terrible they are and a long list of BBB complaints. Amazing he FTC is not involved. I'll send Cameron's info to my friend. Thanks!

On February 6th 2007, I was solicited via the telephone for the purchase of advertising space on a local golf course score card. I opted to participate in the advertising offer. Sales Manager Mark Hogan told me that the ad would run through the summer, beginning in May of 2007. The purchase involved the placement of a 1” by 2” ad copy (my photo, phone number, and the words “Realtor – American Dream Realty”). I paid for the advertising using my Chase business Visa card (card #*********3973).

In May the advertising did not appear in the score card. I contacted the Sales Manager, Mark Hogan. Mark assured me that the ad would be present in the following month (June).

In June, again the ad was not present. I spoke with Mr. Hogan again who apologized and offered to provide me with a free bench advertisement. I told Mark that I did not want a bench ad. Mark assured me that the score card ad would arrive in July. Again in July, the score cards arrived; however, my ad was not present. I spoke with Mark Hogan who assured me that by August 21st, the ad would be printed into the score cards. When I checked again on August 23rd, my advertisement was still not present.

I spoke with Mark again and requested a refund on my credit card. Mark refused to credit my card. I explained to Mark that now that the summer had passed, my ad had no value. Mark still refused.

On September 13th, I wrote a letter to my Chase credit card company requesting a chargeback. This chargeback was based on my never having received the advertising as I was promised at the time of my purchase on February 6th 2007. Chase honored my chargeback request and credited my account and debited the Bench Craft account.

October, November, and December of 2007, I checked the golf course (Valley Gardens) and noted that my ad was still not present on the score card.

I believe in late January I received another demand for payment from Bench Craft Company. This demand included an additional $400 dollars, bringing the total to $775.00.

On February 5th of 2008, one year after I placed the ad, I stopped by the golf course. Again, my ad was absent from the score card. At about 10:30 AM, on that same day, I called Bench Craft and spoke with Guy Rickards. Guy is the Vice President and in charge of accounts receivable. At my request, Guy faxed me the paper work regarding my account. Guy explained that the additional $400 dollars was added because Bench Craft chose to contest my chargeback with the credit card company. Guy explained that Bench Craft lost the decision in arbitration and was subsequently charged $400. Guy told me that Bench Craft then passes that cost on to me.

On February 6th of 2008, I called and spoke with Nathan Ward, the Production Manager at Bench Craft. Nathan told me that he is reprinting the score cards and sending them to Valley Gardens Golf Course with instructions to discard all old cards and put out new ones.

I then received another bill dated 2/7/08 telling me that the account was to be turned over to a collections agency.

On February 12th, 2008 I called and spoke with Guy Rickards again. I asked Guy if he could fax me a copy of a valid contract between Bench Craft and myself. I told him that the contract that he faxed to me on February 5th was between “Mike Castle” and Bench Craft. Guy asked me if Mike Castle was an employee of mine that had authority to authorize a charge on my credit card. I explained to Guy that I have no employees, and that no one has authority to use my credit cards. Guy told me to “Take it up with collections”.

On February 12th 2008, I sent Bench Craft Company a letter. I explained that although I have never seen a contract with my name on it, I have determined that there does now exist (one year after initially speaking with the sales Manager) an advertisement consisting of my photo and information. I further explained to Bench Craft that in the interest of fairness, I was willing to pay the cost of one years’ advertisement ($375.00) as long as the advertisement stayed in circulation for an entire year. (2-12-08 through 2-12-09). I heard no response to this letter.

On February 27th, I received a call from Craig Jones with “National Service Bureau Inc”. Craig told me that he was attempting to collect a debt on behalf of Bench Craft Company. I explained to Craig that I was disputing this debt. Craig told me that the debt was now at $1273.00. I attempted to explain to Craig that I cannot find a valid contract between Bench Craft and myself. Craig yelled at me, told me that he would put the debt on my credit report, and then hung up on me.

Two days later I received a letter from Craig Jones and the National Service Bureau requesting that I respond in writing if I wanted to dispute the debt. The letter indicated that I needed to respond within thirty days of the date of the letter (February 28, 2008).

On March 5th, 2008, I sent a letter via certified mail to Craig Jones indicating my desire to dispute the debt.

Thank you,

I worked for this company for years when I was to young to know better. The now owner, Mr. Charley Cobb is a sexist PIG! This company is a rip off, they are run by a guy named Charley Cobb who has been implicated in Coupon Book scams in the past, refers to women as "Split Bottoms", refers to any clerical work as "Women's Work", is proud of NEVER empolying a Black Person only he uses a more colorful name for African Americans, he promotes and allows highly illegal sales practices, high pressure telemarketing, credit card fraud, identification theft by his sales people, deception in regards to specifics as to when a custome's ad will be displayed, sometimes selling ad space years in advance without informing the customer who thinks their ad will be displayed in a month or so. On and On it goes, why would anyone do business or work for this company knowing all of this????

My name is Kristle Brown. My husband and I have a roofing & Construction company out of Vancouver, WA. I was just thinking today that I hadn't heard from or ever received the copies of the ads or legal folders that I had been sold through the Benchcraft Company.. I accidentally... thank God... typed the URL incorrectly when trying to pull the site up and stumbled upon all of these complaints and the "Rip Off Report"I thinking "OH Geez..." They got me for a lot more than $400. They got me for $375.00.. three times. For not only the score card, but the Real Estate Legal Folders. This all at the end of the year, when we were trying to purchase all of our advertising for the new year.

I emailed them shortly after the new year and asked to see the products that carried these ads.. They promised that I was the only contractor of my kind on these and that there was only one spot left for the year. I needed to purchase them before the 31st of December. I spoke to a man named Carlo Narisco who seemed so excited to help me out and get me a golf course in my area... Camas Meadows. I have yet to see anything, nor hear back from these people... Right after Carlo sold me the golf course ads, another young man named Ryan Foster contacted me.. I guess they thought I was an easy target and sold me ad space on all of the legal folders for the surrounding real estate companies. It was to cover the next year... Nothing. I have had no calls, seen nothing that pertains to these ads... absolutely nothing... !!

I am only now reading these contracts in full to realize the wording and have a hard time believing this is legal?

Finally, now let's get the word out! I had the misfortune of working for this terrible company and can tell you a lot. Let's just say that Mr. Cobb, the lucky guy who inherited this company from it's founders, one who left a long time ago and the other who died in a suspicious house fire. Mr. Cobb is a sexist SOB who openly refers to women as "Split Bottoms", claims they leave a "Slug Trail" around the office from dragging their rears around. He openly refers to the younger men that work there as "Slaps" and as "Boy". He is proud of the fact that he has never hired a Black Person and swears he NEVER will! In short, he is a real PIG!!! He openly promotes the abuse of renewal and new customers by allowing his telephone solicitors to submit phony sales. A customer does not have the opportunity to review a contract before a sale is considered final. Demand to see a contract, look for a start date, read the small print before ever considering doing business with Bench Craft Company! Once a potential customer gives a credit card number, they are considered sold and Bench Craft will absolutely not ever decide that the customer is right and refund a phony sale. This is most often done when a customer chooses to NOT renew but you see, Bench Craft has the credit card info on file and will believe it's sleazy sales person over a customer if the sales person claims the customer authorized a renewal but the customer denies such a sale. Not only will they pursue the customer, they will tack on huge penalties for their supposed collection costs but the thing is they run their own phony collections agency from their own offices. They just tack on extra phony charges to scare the customer into paying before more charges are added!!! Beware! Research the web about this flaky company gone bad. Let your local golf course and realtor know about this company and refuse to do business with such a horrible company. Over 200 BBB complaints in the last year alone!!! Oh, another common problem, they sell ads for one year periods but they will never tell a customer who thinks to ask, just when will their ad be posted on the golf course! There is no start date and no end date on any of their contracts because they let the customer assume the ads will be posted asap but in reality, many times they are selling ads that will not be posted or published for over a year! They will over sell their good jobs and then just let the chips fall where they may if and when a customer realizes the problem. The customer will NEVER get the benefit of the doubt nor a refund for false and misleading sales practices. Mix all of this with a telemarketing room full of the worst type of people and them having access to customers credit card information and you can imagine the end results. Watch out for this once good company gone very very BAD!!!
Please feel free to contact me through this posting if you want any specific information or want any advice as to how to proceed against this company.

I have been involved with this absolutely horrible company since April 2008. I would like to compile information from other people who have been harrassed by this company and am really disgusted after reading all of the complaints put forth against Benchcraft. They lost the dispute against me after I was contacted for a golf score card. The verbal communication did not disclose material facts about the contract and when I told them not to charge my credit card until I had a written contract or website to review about the fine print in the contract they immediately charged my card for $375. This amount was not quoted to me on the phone and full disclosure was not made during the initial phone call about the so-called "No cancellation policy". They were never provided with a proof or any information in order to place this ad and have never printed it on scorecards. After disputing this and providing clear, concise information to Chase, the decision was made in my favor against Benchcraft and the chargeback was made and I received the funds back from Chase. This company continues to harrass and threaten me and has now sent a letter stating that they will pursue collections. I informed Chase of this continued harrassment and I also called the National Service Bureau to inform them of the outcome of the dispute. I will be happy to get together with other people defrauded by this company and am certainly interested in current information on a class action lawsuit. I will also be reporting this to all three credit agencies and have already filed a complete report with the Better Business Bureau that handles complaints in Portland, Oregon.

BEWARE AND PASS THIS INFORMATION ON....

I am writing again to let you know that Bench Craft Company by definition has committed fraud and has crossed state lines to access credit card information regarding golf score card ads. They ran my credit card the same day that I spoke to them about such an ad even though I made it clear that the credit card was to be held on file to reserve space and that I would not agree or sign a contract or submit ad copy until I had reviewed all terms of the written contract. No disclosure was made over the phone when I spoke with Brad Ward, the same man who ran my credit card through the phone order for $375 when I was quoted $300. I asked if there was complete information on the website as to the terms of the contract, which is not posted and he gave me no disclosure of the "No cancellation policy" or other terms of the contract and I only found out about all of the terms and the fact that they had indeed charged my credit card AFTER I received the contract and invoice in the mail. Guy Rickards, the VP and controller, refused to cancel the contract and a full dispute was filed with Chase Card Service, which I easily won after complete information was forwarded to them and the dispute department determined that this company was not entitled to payment and had behaved in a very unethical and suspect manner. I have now reported this company to the Better Business Bureau (this company has had 112 complaints filed in the last 36 months and has an unsatisfactory rating with them) and these are just the complaints that are known or have been filed. I have received repeated threats and harassment from the company, which is now threatening to send the matter to their affiliate (and I believe a subsidiary of their own company), National Service Bureau. As a member of Lifelock, I spoke with someone last night for over an hour and they were very interested in this scam. No contract was signed and they have no leg to stand on, yet even with a fraud alert placed on my credit reports I learned that this collection department has access to my credit reports. This is being investigated and we are trying to determine if they can be blocked from obtaining information. They are conversing with their attorneys in this case as it is so unusual, and they will have one of the attorneys contact me in the next 48 hours with advice on how to proceed with this case. If this company attempts to get my credit reports and uses any information or commits identity theft or tried to charge my card again, they will be reported for a felony and they will be pursued by law enforcement as well as Lifelock's attorneys and investigators. I am filing a complaint with the National Fraud Information Center, my local police department or the Portland, Oregon police department regarding fraud, and may contact the FBI in this matter if deemed appropriate. I have alos filed a detailed report with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) as I was contacted by this company on my cell phone which is also a violation of the National "Do Not Call" registry. I suggest that anyone else who is a victim of fraud, harassment, threats etc involving Bench Craft Company file individual reports with all of these agencies as well.

WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MASS MARKETING FRAUD

Things you should do:

· Ask telemarketers for the name and address of their company and a clear explanation of the offer they are making.

· Ask the caller to send you material in writing to study, including the money back guarantee, before you make a purchase.

· Ask about the company's refund policies.

· Call the Better Business Bureau, your state Attorney General's Office, or the local Consumer Protection Service in the state or city where the company is located, and ask if any complaints have been made against the firm.

· Talk to family and friends, or call your lawyer, accountant, or banker, and get their advice before you make any large purchase or investment.

· Request that your telephone number be removed from the telemarketing list if you do not want to be called.

· Report suspicious telemarketing calls, junk mail solicitations, or advertisements to the National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060.

Things you should NOT do:

· Do not pay for any prize or send money to improve your chances of winning--it is illegal for someone to ask that you pay to enter a contest.

· Do not allow any caller to intimidate or bully you into buying something "right now"--If the caller says, "You have to make up your mind right now," or "We must have your money today," then it's probably a scam.

· Do not give any caller your bank account number--They can use it to withdraw money from your account at any time without your knowledge and/or permission. • Do not give your credit card number to anyone over the telephone unless you initiated the call.

· Never wire money or send money by an overnight delivery service unless you initiated the transaction.

Write to me through this post if you want to share your stories to add to my ongoing file (really thick now will all of the complaints and information gathered on this company so far). I welcome your input and it will aid in the investigation of Bench Craft Company.

Update for June 16, 2008:

I called Craig at National Service Bureau as well as Guy Rickards to inform both of them that I have filed reports with the Portland, Oregon field office of the FBI as well as the FCC, FTC (for fraud and violations of the National Do Not Call Registry), and the Oregon Department of Justice and the attorney General's office. Guy promptly hung up on me and Craig said that he will pursue collections anyway once the paperwork is received from BenchCraft. Please contact me for contact names and phone numbers to submit your complaints as well...the attorney general/DOJ is collecting information on Bench Craft Company and is very interested in all cases of fraud, threats, harassment etc...

Mr. Novak and his blog readers,

I first would like to apologize to anyone who was mistreated by our company. It has become evident that it has gone on in some instances, and I am trying to resolve the issues one account at a time. All complaints at the D.O.J. have been refunded and all action on them canceled. The BBB has 19 UNRESOLVED complaints (see for yourself), and I am working on them to get a resolution. Anymore names you could furnish would help to clean this up before I step down. I would also like to take this opportunity to state some facts about the company that are being overlooked.
1. We were founded in 1982.
2. I, Charley Cobb took over the business in 1999 after working for the old owner for 17 years.
3. The total number of customers sold every year is about 30,000.
4. We currently give free product to about 1,400 Golf Course in about 32 States, mostly public, Military, city, and County owned.
5. We have 16 D.O.J. complaints, 19 unresolved BBB issues. A few customers are on both lists. This is for a 2.5-year period. The total is 28 separate and different businesses.
6. During that same period we have done about 60,000 transactions. Bringing a dissatisfaction rate of way less then one tenth of 1%. Or a satisfaction rate, (at least happy enough to not complain to some entity)of 99.9%
7. We have 105 employees, we are not a fly by night company.

Some customers actually like us, but we have problems we are addressing. Our problems are not in just one area. We have collection tactic problems, sales issues, ad copy design issues, and delivery problems. Some need to be completely changed and some just need to be fixed.

Lastly Mr. Novak, I employ on average between 4 to 9 African-Americans with my company. In fact Patrice Wallace, the head of Human Resources and the one personally in charge of all hiring is an African-American himself and has worked here for over 2 years. He and the African-American sales people he has hired take offense to the false accusations of racism mentioned on your blog. Secondly, I am not a sexist nor have I used any of the terms (ever) mentioned on your blog. If there is anything out there other then an anonymous attack from an ex-employee who hasn’t worked here since 2/28/96, (three years before I owned the company) then please let me know so I can defend myself. All 21 of the women who currently work here would be pleased to sign a statement stating they have never heard any of the sexist terms used in your blog and will send it to anyone who wants it. Play hard, but Play fair.

Again, my apologies to anyone who has had a bad experience, we are endeavoring to correct this.

Sincerely,
Charley Cobb

I was ripped off by Benchcraft Company too. They told me for only $375 I would get advertising at a local golf course for 2 years. I gave them my credit card number and was charged $375. Then I get a bill for another $375. I called and told them this is not what I agreed upon and they argued with me. I eventually paid the other $375, but I never received any advertising at all. Then I get a call for renewal less than a year later and I was mad! Not only did they lie to me, they didn't provide a single service for me. Then they tried to get me again. I can't believe it! I'm a very small landscape company and this $750 they stole from me came out of the measly $100,000 gross we bring in. How am I supposed to pay my bills! I never even received a single phone call refered by the scorecards. (I always ask new customers how they heard of us.)

I've been in business for 20 years+ and a vast majority of my work comes of my business comes from word of mouth.

Since 911 I have been bombarded with advertisers. Tried a few. None of them worked.
I highly advise to any one "BEFORE" you spend money advertising. Call their current advertisers (whom are in your category or associated categories) and ask if their advertising is generating income. Don't ask if it is paying for itself. You're not in the business to pay them. You're in business to make money. Not make enough to pay advertisers. There is no profit in making just enough to pay for advertising. Ask instead if it is turning a good profit for them.

As for Bench Craft (or is it Benchcraft?) advertising? Their sales people are very slick. Too polished at selling with high pressured tactics. Philip (800-824-8311 ext 272) called me several times until he made a pest of himself. I won't be advertising with them. It's a waste of my time.

By the way - Here's the guarantee on my website:
About Bidding or Quoting
- It's unfair TO YOU if other DJ's charge the same; YET, offer far less than Jeff !
...........If they are bidding less they are offering less! Does anybody want to lay cash on it?
That's why I have a video demo available. “Taste it before you buy it”.
I'm one of the best Entertainers available in California & I'll prove it if necessary. I will pay any one $100.00(for 2 hours of your time) if you can show me any one whom can match my services, skills, talent & equipment. All they have to do is pass a 75 question quiz. If any other DJ can pass my test I’ll increase your $100 to $1,000.00 if they pass each question on my comparison test at my office. And, I'll pay the DJ $50 if he can pass my comparison test too. Just think if I’m an idiot? I’ll have to pay you $1,050 to admit it.
You’ll find this on my website www.DJJeff.com

Also notice what I did to a company called "ILD Teleservices". I post about them on my website. They are another rip off artist.
Check your phone bills right now for 3rd party billing.
I received over $1,000.00 in refunds from them.
Any one need help with the process? contact me.

And, Bench Craft (or is it Benchcraft?) Stop calling me dozens of times per month. Unless you want me to write more articles on your tactics.

Warning. Make sure your sales rep writes down on a contract a guaranteed date for delivery and if they do not meet that date, cancel the contract in writing and call your credit company to cancel the charge.

Bench Craft has an aggressive telemarketing team that will tell you anything to get the sale. I was told the specific holes that were "available now" for bench signs or tee signs. I selected three on two courses with an incentive for two years worth of signs. This was in February 2008. After multiple attempts to get action enough was enough and in November, I called to request a refund and cancel the order. I sent a letter to the president and called my credit card company to reverse the charges. In November through January, they reacted and finally got the signs up (that I had canceled and no longer wanted. Because the contract (remember this was a phone sale) did not have a guaranteed date of delivery, the credit card company could not find in my favor.

I am very upset and will never do business with them again.

this site needs no stars rating!, bench crap company should be there name, a 100% rip-off company, i have been promised a bench for one year now, i call just to hear how stupid the next excuse is. Buying stock in todays market is safer than talking to this company, buyer beware!

I would say if they have your credit card on file Cancel your card and get a new one. Trust me. You should be careful who you give it too. They will charge it with out your signature. They charged mine and now I am fighting to have it reversed and I am also in the process of filing criminal charges. I never gave my permission they had it because I bought previously. I never agreed to a second.

in 2004 i was contacted by bench craft. they were going to post an advertisement for my company at the golf course. before i could get my design ready my brother got into a very serious car accident. they were trying to send him to prison for 40 years. you can imagine the mental stress our family was under. i contacted the company to see if i could have a few more days to complete my design.they said no and sent me an amature design. being in the art field i did not want this design to represent my business. the sign was never posted. i was contacted by an attorney and was told that i had 30 days to respond to the courts. the court sent me a letter letting me know that i had no obligation to pay this bill. a few days ago i checked my credit and was amazed to see a $1015.00 bill from bench craft company. when i contacted bench craft i talked to guy and he said he could not help me. not 5 minutes later i got a call from craig at the collection agency. he was yelling at me and calling me a liar. craig told me even if i paid the debt today he would make sure that this debt never came off of my credit. when i asked him to repeat this he said "why" and i told him that he was on speaker phone so that we could share the conversation. he told me "he didn't have time to play my f--ng games." since then i have been called and harrassed at least 4 times a day. i am not a cheat. i am not a thief, and i do not need to lie. unfortunately for me i have lost the letter from the judge and can not remember which court this case went through. if anybody can give me this information i would be forever in debt to you. i need to get a copy from the courts so that i can drive the 45 minutes to seattle and shove it in craigs face. please can any body help me find out the name of the attornies this company uses and what court they go through? i can be contacted at islandinktattoo@yahoo.com
thank you
